Tips to Manage Post Holiday (& Year Round) Clutter!

30 Dec

For those that celebrate it, with Christmas over its time to de-clutter and put away the decorations and gifts that have been unwrapped.  My motto is “In with the new & out with the old!”

I find the end of the year and post holidays is a great time to re-evaluate the clutter and get more organized.  Here’s some tips I’d like to share with you to implement now and some to help throughout the year:

  • Kids received a lot of new clothes as gifts?  Sort into two categories (1) Wear Now & (2) Grow Into/Wear Later.  The wear now pile should be placed in the hamper, washed and put in the respective closet/drawers.  The grow into pile should be stored/placed where you will remember it in the Spring/Summer/Fall when the size & season is correct – remember to utilize out of season clothing by layering.  For example, tank tops that my daughter  received last summer for her birthday that were too big are fine this winter as undershirts with PJs or school clothing to layer and keep warm!
  • Kids got a lot of new toys as presents?  This is usually the case with gifts from aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, grandparents, Santa, parents, etc.  At Christmas and Birthdays, we just let our daughter open 2-3 new toys (more than that can be overwhelming and messy) and we put the others away in a closet for later – it’s great to have them select a new toy to open when they are sick and home from school, as a reward for being super good/helpful, during spring break, summer vacation, etc.
  • Time to re-evaluate clothing and toys the kids outgrew.  With all the “new” stuff in the house from the holidays, it’s a great time to start getting rid of some of the “old” stuff.  Clothing that is worn out/faded or a bit outgrown, toys that are almost broken or outgrown for your kid’s age.  What I find super helpful and easy to maintain throughout the year is to keep a plastic tote or garbage bag in each walk-in closet to collect the clothing & stuff that you will sell (Craigslist is great – see my blog posts for tips on using Craigslist whether you are selling or buying) or donate/give away!  When the tote/bag is full you know it’s time to drop it off at church, Amvets, Goodwill, etc.  Also, if a charity makes periodic curbside pick-ups in your neighborhood, you are prepared to gather & combine the bags/totes and donate!
  • Evaluate your own stuff!  Did you get a new robe, slippers, sofa throw, coffee maker, etc. as a gift?  Do you still really need the old one?  Decide to either donate or try to sell the old things that you don’t need and de-clutter your home!
  • Re-gifting?  Yes, I’m going to touch this taboo topic with a 10 foot pole!  A lot of us do it…did you get a gift (with no gift receipt) that’s not useful to you, doesn’t fit, a duplicate of something you already have, etc?  Maybe you maintain a “re-gift” pile in a closet or just donate the item(s) or if you have a friend/co-worker/family member that can use it and appreciate it, just give it to them now so the item can be useful to someone now.

Repurpose Glass Jars!

1 Dec

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Glass jars can be repurposed as a vase or to help you de-clutter and organize! For example, my wife loves the bottled Starbucks Frapuccinos with some added milk to tone down the sweetness in the morning.  These bottles are a nice size to repurpose as a vase – my preschooler loved placing flowers from our yard into the bottle on our dining room table during the Spring and Summer!  Another example is how my wife uses a glass spaghetti sauce jar to store home-made jam/preserves!

Also, the glass jars from Earth’s Best baby food are great when repurposed to bring out a daily amount of Cheerios/dry snacks for your infant/toddler.  These small jars fit easily into a diaper bag!  Remember, glass is BPA free! We also use these small glass jars to de-clutter and organize craft items – great containers for beads, buttons, etc or to rinse out paint brushes when your child is doing art at home!  Additionally, we use these jars to hold the ”fancy” toothpicks and skewers for our daughter’s bento style lunch box!

Another great repurposing idea I came across is from Rikkihibbert.co.za - she has a great blog post of using glass jars as photo frames.  It’s super cool!  Be sure to check it out!

So, think about repurposing glass jars in your home – it’s useful recycling that can help you de-clutter and organize!

Repurpose Plastic Containers!

28 Nov

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Our family is a member of Sam’s Club and we always get the large plastic container of organic baby spinach or spring mix salad.  After we are done with the veggies, we wash out the container and repurpose it to de-clutter and organize things in our house.  They work great to hold small toys like My Little Pet Shop, small dolls and clothes, sets of play food, etc.  The plastic containers are also helpful to organize the individual size snacks we buy rather than leave the granola bars, 100 calorie packs of cookie or chips, etc in the cardboard boxes.  You don’t know what you have left since you can’t see inside the box on your pantry shelf, but with a clear plastic ”bin” you see what you still have and know when you need to restock!

We’ve repurposed medium size plastic containers to de-clutter and organize small electric items like night lights, batteries, cords & accessories for cell phones, etc.

The smaller plastic containers from berries or tomatoes can also be repurposed and are perfect size to de-clutter and organize crayons, colored pencils, markers and other craft type items!

Repurposing = Recycling and these clear plastic containers are great!

Secrets from a Stylist – Emily Henderson

19 Nov

My wife & I watched the latest season of HGTV‘s Design Star and we really like the winner, Emily Henderson and her design philosophy that “home design should reflect personal fashion.”  She de-clutters, organizes and repurposes as she decorates to match the personality of the homeowner.  Check out her show, “Secrets from a Stylist“ and her blog/website!

Each episode is just 30 minutes long, but that amazingly short time, you see Emily meet her clients, get some insight into their personalities and styles as Emily does her “style diagnostic” – a super neat analysis based on what hat/shoes/paint color/lamp shade/artifact/plate, you name it, that they select from a sampling that Emily gathers for them to select from.  Then Emily summarizes the styles, goes shopping at thrift shops and such and she actually does two versions of a make-over of the room(s) in the lucky clients’ residence.  Her work is amazing and such fun to watch!  This is my personal favorite HGTV show!!!

Starting a friend on Craigslist (De-clutter for CA$H)

18 Nov

So, here’s how I went about helping a friend get started as a seller on Craigslist to “De-clutter for CA$H.”  She has heard about my success with Craigslist and asked me to help her out.  I’ve copied and pasted portions of our emails below to document the process.

FRIEND:  I have this exact snow suit from The Children’s Place that [my son] doesn’t need anymore that I wouldn’t mind selling.  It is a size 6-12 months.  He used it only a couple of times to keep warm and for pictures so it is pretty new.
http://cgi.ebay.com/NWT-CHILDRENS-PLACE-BABY-BOY-SNOW-SUIT-0-6-MONTHS-/370453803286?pt=US_Baby_Toddler_Boys_Clothes&hash=item5640c47116
They are selling it on eBay for $15.99 (link above) and I see on The Children’s Place website that they have something similar for $19.99 on sale.
http://www.childrensplace.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/TCPSearch?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&N=0&Ne=&Nao=0&sale=0&url=SearchView&Ntt=snowsuit
I’m thinking we can price it for $17.99.  I don’t want to take less than $13 for it probably.
I’ll send you a picture or let me know if you can use the one from the eBay listing.  Also, let me know your thoughts on pricing.

ME:  I’d include the link to the retail one at Children’s Place but use my own photo.  People want to see the actual product to verify no rips, stains, etc.   On pricing, since they could get it new for $20, I’s list it for $15 and consider going as low as $10-12.  Do you want me to create and set up the post for you after you send me a couple jpegs (front & back)?  [The wife] and I always think “what are we willing to pay for the item?” – ideally 1/2 price since it’s used, but as much as 75% of retail if it’s like new and a “hot” item.

FRIEND:  Pricing sounds good.  I’ll send you pictures and a few other things this week for you to post.  I sent you my c-list account info.

ME:  I took a look at Craigslist for the competition, most ads are for girl snow suits, so this could be a plus!  Start with $15, but consider selling for $10.  The girl snow suits are listed for $6-$12 for like brand, size and condition.  Most people may not want to pay a lot because it’s a single season item and not necessarily worn everyday.  Send me the jpegs and I will set up your first ad!

TEXT OF THE CRAIGSLIST AD:

LIKE NEW light blue boy’s snow suit in size 6-12 months. Keep your baby warm this winter!
Only worn a few times – no tears or stains. From a pet free and smoke free home.
Retails new for $20 at The Children’s Place. Asking $15 – cash and carry.

Don’t be a Hoarder!

17 Nov

De-Clutter & Organize Kid’s Hair Accessories!

16 Nov

With a preschool age daughter who loves hair pins, clips and pony tail rubber bands, we had a mess of all these things mixed up in a box.  Then we tried sorting them out and placing them by category in clear sandwich bags – this was a little better, but was annoying to have to open and close the bags and still dig around a little in the bag.  Well, my wife found a jewelry holder at a Ross store for $7.99 and we repurposed it to de-clutter and organize our daughter’s hair accessories!  It’s double-sided and works great!  We just hang it on the towel bar in the bathroom and we can all see what’s in each clear pocket and our daughter can just look and choose what hair accessory to use each day – no more digging around!!!  So worth the eight bucks!

If you can’t find something like this nifty jewelry holder that my wife stumbled across, you can use a nice wide/thick/sturdy ribbon.  Hang it in the closet, a hook, towel rack, etc and clip all the hair accessories on it.  No more digging around for that pink or yellow or purple hair pin/clip – you can see it on the ribbon and get it right away!

Tips for Succe$$ful selling on Craigslist

15 Nov
Craigslist

Image via Wikipedia

As an avid Craigslist user for almost 6 years, I wanted to share my “Steps to Successful Selling.”

  1. De-clutter to identify items to sell/donate.  If thinking about the entire house + garage + attic/basement is too overwhelming, just focus on one room at a time and have a spot to put the ”for sale” vs. “donate” items.  Be honest and serious on this all important first step!  For instance, my wife and I are not planning to have more children, so the maternity clothing was donated (an easy few boxes/bags of stuff out of the house!).  We saved everything from our first daughter (I swear I bought like 50+ plastic totes to hold clothes, baby gear, infant toys, etc), so now as our second daughter outgrows things, it’s sold or donated.  Things we don’t need/use anymore were sold on Craigslist – i.e. pack n play, infant car seat, etc.  This is where my mantra ”De-clutter for CA$H” came from.
  2. Research market price for exact/similar items and “new retail” price.  Check Craigslist in your city to see if others are selling the same or similar item.  Note the condition and sale price.
  3. Be honest on condition of item and price accordingly.  What would you pay for it if you’re willing to buy it used?  My wife and I would usually hope for 1/2 of retail price, but it also depends on how in demand the item is.  The most we paid for anything is around 75% of retail if it’s in excellent or like new condition.
  4. Consider if the item is “hot/popular,” a “necessity” or total “discretionary/splurge” type item.  Hot/popular items in great condition can possibly sell for closer to retail price.  A necessity, if priced fairly, should sell quickly.  While the discretionary/splurge item may take sometime, especially in current economic/unemployment times.
  5. Have in your mind a realistic minimum price you’re willing to sell the items for.  Don’t be surprised by low ball offers you receive from some shoppers.  Either stick to your original price or discount a little for a sure and quick sale.  If you are firm on your price, say so in your ad.  When I was selling a Tiny Love play mat, I posted it for $15, but knew I’d sell it for as low as $12, especially if the person was going to buy multiple items.
  6. In your ad/post, always include the link to the retail item for the actual product if it’s still sold at stores.  This provides all the details/description and also verifies how much the item is new, vs. your resale price.
  7. Always use your own photos.  It’s okay to include the ”catalog” picture of the item, but you want to also take your own photos and include them in your Craigslist ad so buyers can see your item and know if there are any tears/stains/damage/etc.
  8.  Set a date on which if it doesn’t sell, you will donate it (at least you get a charitable deduction).  Some charities go through neighborhoods several times a year and leave a postcard in your mailbox to inform you of the next date and you can leave your items at the curb and they pick it up.  Some charities will come pick up items if you call to schedule.  Others have convenient drop off stations.  For example. check out Goodwill or Amvets.  Now that winter is approaching, we have a few items at home that didn’t sell that will be dropped off at Goodwill or my daughter’s school’s rummage sale!
  9. Repost to Craigslist weekly to make sure your listing is “fresh” – best day is usually Thursday or Friday so you get the weekend shoppers!
  10. If selling multiple items in the same category (i.e. baby gear, clothing, DVDs) offer a small discount for purchase of multiple items.  Also, as you can only include a maximum of 4 photos in a Craigslist ad/post, if you are selling multiple items, set up a free Flickr or Picasa web album with photos of all your items for sale, with a short description & price in the photo caption and include the link to the photo album in your ad.  This worked really well for us when we were selling a lot of the baby clothing and gear!
  11.  State “Cash and Carry” in your ad!  I actually had one person want to write me a check for a purchase!  Hello…I don’t know you from Adam!  Another person wanted me to deliver the item.
  12. Once you’re schedule to make a sale, exchange cell phones numbers to be able to contact each other should schedules change, the buyer is stuck in traffic/running late and to verify the buyer is still coming so you’re not waiting around for nothing
  13. Be prepared to make change.  Depending on the price of your items, have five singles, a five and a ten dollar bill so you are able to provide change.
  14. Once a sale actually occurs, delete the ad/post on Craigslist so others are not contacting you on an item no longer available.  If I’m still contacted by possible buyers, I always email them back that the item has been sold – just common courtesy.
  15. Check my earlier blog post on Safety Tips when buying or selling via Craigslist!  Also, stay tuned for future blog posts with some of my actual Craigslist ads as examples and more stories of “De-cluttering for CA$H!” as I am also helping a friend to start selling her no longer needed items on Craigslist!

If you have some other tips or suggestions, please leave a comment.  Thanks!
